Great Room Creation

I was curious where the term ‘Great Room’ came from. Apparently in the 90’s builders were trying to figure out how to utilize home layouts better to avoid rooms that frequently turned into dead space and bring together a unified space in the center of the home usually with raised ceilings, hence the rise of the ‘Great Room’. You’re welcome, I know you’ve always wondered.

The Great Room in our home fits that description well. It is the anchor of our home. When our home was being built, we couldn’t wait to see come together because of the fireplace. Usually, a great room has a focal point and often it’s the fireplace and/or mantel surround.

img_6572One of the best pieces of advice I can give when it comes to design, especially designing a home and making choices that have a big impact – if you have a chance to see a stone in person it’s always best. Knowing I wanted dark stone, I wanted to see it in a large pattern first, this was exactly what I had in mind. It makes it easier to find when you go into the stone yard with an idea and an image of what you’re looking for.

After the room was painted, it made me so excited to see the stone go up…

<Sadly I don’t have an after picture because the room was a disaster and I couldn’t get a clear shot of it mounted.>

We decided to do floating shelves (instead of a bookcase) to mirror the floating shelves in the kitchen.

This room was a labor of love. All the elements and details were specifically thought through, and it feels like a deep breath everytime I’m in here. I hope our guest feel the same way. You can see a full tour of the decorated room here.
